AC Milan expect Marco Borriello to be sidelined through injury until February at the earliest.
The 26-year-old striker has already been out of action since November with a thigh injury picked up during training.
Borriello has made just six appearances since returning to the Rossoneri from Genoa last summer.
"Next year will be important for Borriello to recover his health," said the club's managing director Adriano Galliani.
"He is almost certainly out for the whole of January."
